What TO wear – Nanny style….!

So I promised a story about the What Not to Wear chicks, Trinny and Susannah and here it is, with a cameo role…in fact a LEADING PERFORMANCE by none other than my very own stylin’ mum, aka Nanny.

You might want to grab a cuppa, this is likely to be a long one, but  I promise there is stamping in here too.

Somewhere.

So it starts with the news that Trinny and Susannah are doing a bit of a tour of Westfield shopping centres, and being rather long time fans, Mum and I decide that we simply MUST go along to one of their appearances.

We arrive at Whitfords shopping centre with not much time to spare and hardly any space either, since apparently there are a BUNCH of long time fans in Perth and evidently none of them have jobs, allowing them to be hanging out at a shopping centre at 10am on a Wednesday morning.

So right on time, cue those gorgeous women all their apparently flawed but well-camouflaged glory, and more than a single utterance of the word ‘tits’.

After a bit of a natter, they head out into the audience on the hunt for stage-fodder of the variety that have not a single clue of how to dress themselves appropriately.  Susannah was over on the other side of the audience and Trinny was on our side, but being well back in the crowd we figured they’d grab their victims in the first few steps and that would be that.

Wrong!

I was so busy taking random pictures above my head in case I managed to get Trinny in the corner of one of them, that I didn’t realise that it was no longer necessary as I could take this one instead…..

trinny-close-up

She was suddenly right in front of us and looking right at mum!

Next thing I knew, I was an extra handbag heavier and this was happening…

mum-trinny-stagebound

Mum was disappearing through the crowd with my style idol en-route to the stage!

Which, considering that these girls are in the business of telling people that they a bereft of any clue about fashion and personal styling, SHOULD have been a concern, but I was too excited that I had stood face to face with Trinny and mum was HOLDING her HAND!

Soon it was mum’s turn to be centre stage….

All worries about public humiliation of the style variety were laid to rest when they announced that mum was a fabulous example of how a 60-something woman should look!  Her hair is the perfect cut and colour, her glasses the perfect shape and her t-shirt just the right shade of ‘mink’

GO NANNY!

The only shame about the whole event was that the clueless lot that were given a bit of a makeover were also given a shopping voucher and a new Nikon camera!

Westfield shopping voucher….. $250

New Nikon camera….$300

Walking around Whitfords shopping centre to the stares and whispers of those who wished that THEY had as much style as you….  PRICELESS!

Now I did promise that there would be some stamping in amongst all of this fashion and frivolity, so here it is…

mum-trinny-layout.jpg

This is the 12×12 layout that  I set for everyone at our team stamping day, and I made mine up with the pictures of mum’s close encounter with Trinny.

mum-trinny-close.jpg

At the end of the show there were elbows and sharpie pens flying as the entire crowd descended upon the girls for autographs and photo’s.  I managed to grab Trinny on her way past and asked if she would mind having a photo taken with ‘the one who got it right’, to which she promptly and graciously agreed!

So now it’s your turn!  Do you have any close encounter stories of the celebrity kind?  Let me know all about it, or better yet, scrapbook it and leave a link in the comments!  I’d love to check them out!

Now if only I’d had my camera handy when I was chatting with Keanu Reeves 13 years ago….

That is soooooo cool! What a fantastic scrapbook page too! Isn’t that nice to know your Mum got it right, she must have been questioning her style all the way up to the stage!
Did you really meet Keanu??! I met the actor that played (roughian shoulder length hair) Scott on Home and away a few years ago, and Have met Richie McCaw, come’on Aussies, you know who that handsome devil of an All Black Rugby Captain is don’t you??? :-) Talking about him,the Fam and I are off to see the All Blacks Vs. Close encounters of the celebrity kind? Well, when you go to fandom conventions it is bound to happen. Then again they’re also more like to be ones that will make everyone else go “who?”. All that said, I’d never thought to scrapbook them. Hmmm, me, three spatulas and two Lord of the Rings actors…

I’ve also been to quite a few cricket games… (and that “dot dot dot” is not of the Mama Mia kind before anyone starts wondering! Neither is the previous one!)

Nope, I’ve got too many to mention!

Ooohhh La La!!!!! Amongst all the excitement I don’t even know where to begin… mUst take a deep breath (HERE)!… OKidoki!!!!…. First up…. GO NANNY!!!!! When you said she was taken by the hand of ‘THE’ Trinny… I’m looking at your pictures thinking…. WHY??? (add elevated tone here) Nanny looks just lovely!!!! ANd then I read on… and think… OF COURSE!!!! (more elevation required!!!)…. Ooohh how excitement about being soooo close to Trinny…. I bet she’s as lovely up close and personal as she is in your photo…. suprised it’s not blurry, god knows I would’ve been shaking so hard, I probably would’ve missed her completely and taken a pic of some random stranger in the background!!! hahaha.
Now onto your BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL page…. OMG it’s just stunning and I must say a SJK (me) CASE coming on!!!! LOVE LOVE IT… must of course buy the stamp set first… doing that right now!!!
And now for a brush with fame ( are you bored with my random waffling at the moment?… SORRY!! :o )
Well I’ve shaken hands with Mr John Farnham…. oh yeah!!! Oh and his drummer too…. always had a crush on him, and well I got to shake his hand too… oh can I brag and say that I was the ONLY one who’s hand he shook…. hehehehe. Oh and then last year while we were at the airport in Brisbane, I was standing right next to Ronnie Dunn (Brooks and Dunn) (Please tell me you know who they are!!! hahahah) but I was too shy to talk to him or ask for a photo… instead thumped Shaney on the arm and tried to mutter the word…. it’s it’s, it’s um….. its’ Brooks and Dunn!!!!)
So there you go…. a HUGE comment… so sorry about that and now I have to break the news that unfortunately I have NOWT photos of any of my encounters… must work on that in the future…hahaha

Sarah, this post is hilarious – you have a wonderful way with words. Great photos, and yep, Nanny sure is “stylin’”. Sometimes it pays to be downright daggy (bummer about missing out on the voucher and camera), but these moments captured with your camera are priceless! Beautiful layout, using some of my absolute faves from the current catty. Christine xx

Hi Sarah
I love your blog, as someone else said above you have a way with words! What an awesome day you and your lovely Mum had, and what a fabulous compliment to your Mum too! I am a new demo in Kalgoorlie and just realized I have missed your clear out day by one day as we travelled down to Perth yesterday-drats! I think I am about to have a brush with fame as the choir I direct as a primary school music specialist has been asked to sing with Shannon Noll in Kalgoorlie when he is there on the annual Indian Pacific Outback Train trip in December. Am sure the kids will think it is way cool….

OH what a FABULOUS story Sarah! I enjoyed that little giggle!

Now tell me, was it in Perth you chatted to Keanu Reeves? Because I saw him about 13 years ago when he came with his band Dogstar! Saw him and had a chat as well…..it was in some dodgy nightclub in Northbridge…..funny if we were both at the same event hey!

Oh so jelous you have met Jamie Durie too….he is kinda “hubba hubba”….LOL!

just stumbled on your site and i love it. what a great story. I myself had an encounter with a celebrity..it was at a local fair here inVT USA and I was at a food stand going for the ketchup when someone else grabbed it at the same time I turned around and there was kicks brooks from the famous duo of country music Brooks and dunn. I was so in shock I didnt even ask for photo but I still have the memory. Thanks for listening and for sharing.
