Merry classmate Christmas!

At the end of every school year I like to do a little something for the kids in my big girl’s class at school.  The trouble is, it gets harder to do something ‘different’ each year, especially as they’re getting older and more discerning!

This year, was made a little easier by virtue of the fact that a few weeks ago, a fellow demonstrator posted a message on our demonstrator forum (FAB resource that it is!) that she had loads and loads of long, thin self-sealing plastic bags that she’d be happy to offload in packs of 100 to any interested parties.

Turns out there were a lot of interested parties, so it’s a good thing she really did have loads of them!

I relieved her of 10 packs, which if you bother to do the maths, is a whole BUNCH of bags, but I had never seen them anywhere before and they’re perfect for fun little gifts of the classmate variety, and with my small girl starting Kindy next year, I’m all of a sudden going to find myself needing to make double of everything at gift time.

As it turns out, another demonstrator on the forum alerted us all to the fact that Woolworths had packs of red, green and white jelly beans available for Christmas, so after picking up an armful of those, sitting with my big girl on the floor, first sorting the jelly beans into colours, then loading them into the bags, a stamped and folded tag punch later, this is what we had….!

The Sparkly and Bright stamp set would have to be my favourite Christmas set for this year – SO cute and whimsical and perfect for this particular job :-)

I arrived at the little folded over tag at the top, as it gave me a place to stamp something, without being so labour intensive that I would start to hyperventilate when the crowd of seven year olds in receipt of the jelly bean packets started ripping them apart and throwing them away.

I put together an impromptu little tutorial in case you’re wondering how to achieve the folded over tag idea for yourself.  Please keep in mind the word impromptu when considering the quality (or not) of the pictures…

Start with a piece of cardstock folded in half.  I used Whisper White, which is a bit thinner than the regular cardstock so the double width is easily punched through.  Not sure how the thicker stuff would go…

folded-tag-1

Now slide the folded cardstock into to the punch so that there is a tiny (1mm or so) gap between the cardstock and the top of the punch…

folded-tag-2

Now punch!  And this is what you get…

folded-tag-3

And if you’re doing a whole batch of these as I was, you can cut strips of cardstock (I cut a piece of A4 Whisper White in half lengthways, then folded it in the middle, lengthways again), you can punch out a whole series of them…

folded-tag-4

To attach them to the bags, I simply stapled the back of the tag to the bag, then stuck the front of the tag down with a Stampin’ Dimensional.

Since I have a truckload of these bags now, I’m going to give a pack of 100 away to one of you, but you have to earn it!

Tell me your ideas for little stamped gifts so that I can be ready in advance for next year – I have double the amount to make from 2011 onwards remember, so I’m going to have to get myself prepared well in advance!

Winner will be randomly chosen on Monday!

awesome idea Sarah … now that left over piece has a whole heap of martini glasses! Can you guess who is getting a bundle of cocktail mixes and a slushie machine for Christmas??

Stunning idea for little kids Sarah. The way you made the tag is brilliant! I loved your comment about keeping it simple to avoid hyperventilation (I hope that has only one L …I can't be bothered getting a dictionary out at this time of the morning……it's 3am, the wind is blowing like crazy outside and I'm wide awake). Clouds and silver linings come to mind though as I have a new BIG toy :)

These look great sarah. I love the idea with the punch.

Love your little bags – they sure would come in handy next year for my 2… What I did this year for my son's Kindy class was to thread a candy cane through a tag (2 sized tag punches layered with a punched out star – my son wrote out “from Tyler” on each and attached the stars) to Christmas pencils (which I picked up from “Hot Dollar” for about $2 – $2.50 for 10 pencils). We made those in one afternoon. Also for my daughter's play school class, I cut out tag shapes from DSP, attached some ribbon to the top, stuck on a picture on one side and a chocolate santa on the other. Quick, easy and cheap… :-)

Love them Sarah, I was thinking of using mine at Easter, if I can find little chocolate eggs to put in them.

I bet the kids loved these treats!!!
I made little post-it note holders to sell at work, really quick to make and a work-mate asked me to personalise 2 with her kid's names. She was thrilled with it. Made one using Celebration DSP for her son, and used Playdate for her daughter. Otherwise, you could do similar to the jelly bean bags but fill with cheap hair things or ribbon & buttons for craft.

For my daughter's teachers this year I used the clear ornaments! I'm sure you have already heard & made these. I make a different ornament each year! This year I used the Jolly Old St, Nick ( the snowman stamp). I stamped it on transparency since I didn't have any Window sheets. I then colored the snowman, punched a small hole and ran some pretty cord through the hole. I then rolled it up tightly so that I could put in the small hole of the ornament. I then put salt in it to look like snow and to make it sit up! I then tied a red piecew of ribbon at the top of the ornament! Very cute & easy!

I got a wooden plaque from a craft store (I think all of about 70 cents) and decorated with DSP and little people from All in the family, then along the top of the plaque we used the big shot letters to spell out TOP TEACHER. I got my daughter to colour in the people – even though the control freak in me, kind of did it begrudgingly – but it was nice to have her be involved. A piece of ribbon to hang and there you go – from what I hear she was thrilled.

    Hi Sarah,

Are you able to tell me whereabouts the other demo got them from? i'd love to get some for the years ahead too…but a quick google search only pulls up pretzel bags which start at 2 inches wide.

I don't have any neat-o tips for you sorry (so I know I'm not in your free pack draw). I'd just be looking at filling them with candy and topping them off as you have done (although now I will be paying extra attention to what sorts of candy I could put in them ;-) .

    Best wishes,
    Sam.
