Help me out, ’cause this jury’s out!

in Cards, Stamping

I am having rather a run of trying out different Christmas card ideas of late, and was excited with a bit of an ‘outside the square’ idea that I tried out the other day, using a very non-Christmas stamp set to make a Christmas card.

Trouble is, when I asked Tim what he thought of it he was less than enthusiastic…  Not that he is ever overly exhuberant when I ask him papercraft related questions, much as I’m not super-enthused when he asks me to “stand like this” so he can try out his latest karate moves, but I wanted some feedback about this card, so I made the mistake of asking for some…..

Me: What do you think, does this look like a Christmas card?
Tim: Hmmmm, not really….
Me: Why not, what’s wrong with it?!
Tim: It’s the leaf….
Me: That’s not a leaf, that’s a tree
Tim: Well I guess there’s your problem

At least he’s honest I guess, but I kinda liked it….!

So help me out people….  Could this pass as Christmassy, or do I change the greeting and just keep it as a standby non-Christmas card…?!

Your honest feedback would be appreciated…!

Well I like it actually, because it is, as you say… “outside the square”. Would the odd “bauble” on some of the branches be overkill though? They would have to be tiny of course. xxxx

Boys!!!! Well!!!! Given I would quite likely get the VERY same response from Shane.. I must confess to having a little giggle. BUT….. I actually REALLY like it. It’s simple and lovely. Maybe…just maybe try the tree with Old Olive… perhaps that might help Tim think it’s actually a tree… a LEAF!!!! hahahaha.

(PS … consuming the last of the WCTT as we type!!!!)

Well I like it too ….and not just because you made it. It’s the JOY that makes it Christmassy, nothing else says Christmas like the word ‘joy’ so I think it’s a winner. Much as I love your dear husband there isn’t a leaf in creation that has a vein system like the little tree on the card.

So, there you have it. I was going to ask what WCTT in SJK’s comment meant then I worked it out. What I want to know is what happened to the rest of the packet…hmmmm?

Ooh, I love your horticultural take on it Aunty Mair! I shall pass that little snippet of info onto my boy :)

Oh, and she ate them all herself I bet!

…and another thing, I hooted with laughter as I imagined you standing still (as still as one can when faced with a black-belted person) with your eyes squished shut waiting for the ‘latest move’. Goes waaaay beyond wifely devotion!

Hey Sar!
I really like the card and I love that you have used a totally non-Christmassy stamp to think outside the box! I think the With Joy makes it certain to be a Christmas card. I wondered about possibly having a red or green card base in order to bring out the Christmas colours even more…?! Just an idea!
But I really like the card and it doesn’t look like a leaf! ;)

Hi Sarah

I like the stamps, colours and layout but my idea, for what it’s worth is to try it on a smaller card like a 4″x4″.

It doesn’t not look like a leaf, but I’m sure my other half would say it was a leaf too, so it must be a bloke thing, lol!

Mornin Sair! What about trying to pop one or 2 brads on the tree somewhere so you can really tell its a chrissy tree! Maybe even try making that green layer bigger so you can see more of it! Is the tree popped up on a dimentional? If not, that would probably be the only other thing I’d do!

All in all though, I really love it! Its a great, simple chrissy card – I’m a big fan of those! lol

Sorry Sarah, I’m with your hubby, I’m not feeling it. Maybe on a red card base with the dots and some ribbon. Perhaps some bling here and there either on the tree or on the dots?
Kind regards, Yvonne :)

If Tim opened this card mid-late December – I reckon he’d assume it was a chrissy card without a second thought. To cute! (the card too)

Sorry Sarah! I like the card, but if you didn’t say it was a Christmas card I wouldn’t have known. Maybe more reds and greens – perhaps a ribbon or a strip somewhere?

If it’s any consolation though, I made some Chrissy cards (finally) and feeling rather proud, asked Jamie what he thought. He thinks they are “nice but aren’t they a bit too complicated”…. *sigh*

Lovely Sarah,
Oh mate that was a good chuckle!!! Leaf… I LOVE IT!!! Men do have an interesting view on our paper craft don’t they!!?? So because you asked what we think, I’d have to say that I do really like it but to be honest I don’t LOVE it!! Sorry I am a very honest person ask my stamp club members… I like subtle Christmas cards but something is not quite right??? Perhaps red like what was suggested or the decorations, or maybe red ribbon behind the whole center piece… or then maybe actually stamping the Christmas word from the set, of course much more obvious!! Anyhow thanks for the comment back re-garnish!! I’m super great, only 3 weeks left till little bundle arrives!!! So excited!!
Love and Hugs Sharnee :0)

Hi Sarah

Can I start by saying that I really love your work and I do love this card and the simplicity of it, and I also like Chrissy cards that are not Chrissy colours – but… it doesn’t look like a Chrissy card to me. Sorry…. Still love the card though.

The man couldn’t grow weeds let alone tell the difference between a leaf and a tree. Definitely a tree but not your standard style Christmas card at all. That said, it’s different and that’s always more captivating and imaginative than standard !
